Alcohol Abuse

Treatment for Alcohol Abuse

As the world continues to get busier and more demanding, alcohol abuse is becoming increasingly prevalent within our society.

Weighed down by the pressures of school, work, and societal standards, many people find themselves coping with their stress and seeking comfort through alcohol.

While alcohol abuse often emerges from a need for comfort or escape, alcohol itself is considered a depressant.

When drinking alcohol, a person’s brain automatically begins to slow down all functions. This leads to the common behaviors seen among intoxicated individuals including loss of balance, trouble speaking clearly, and a lack of concern for things happening around them.

What often starts out innocently with the occasional drink after a particularly long day can quickly escalate to alcohol abuse when the individual becomes so reliant on alcohol that it is affecting their daily life.

When the abuse reaches this level, the addiction then becomes a danger, not only to the individual but to those around them.

When a person is suffering with an addiction to alcohol, they become much more likely to be involved in negative behaviors including driving while intoxicated, lashing out in anger at those around them, and even becoming physically violent.

Alcohol Abuse Statistics

The  National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) collects yearly data to provide up-to-date statistics on alcohol abuse within the United States. Below, we have listed a few particularly important statistics involving alcohol abuse.

When polling individuals 18 years and older, 86.4% reported having had an alcoholic beverage at one point in their life.

Of individuals 18 years and older, 26.9% reported partaking in binge drinking during the last month.

At the time of the survey in 2018, there were 15.1 million individuals 18 years and older with an addiction to alcohol.

Of the individuals suffering from alcohol abuse, only 6.7% received treatment.

It is extremely important to be aware of these statistics in order to understand the impact of alcohol abuse on our society. For, until we are fully aware of the problem, we stand no chance at fixing it.

Alcohol abuse has become a common predator within our society. The addiction takes hold of a person’s life gaining the ability to destroy not only that person but others through them.
